Presented by Massey University – Whiti o Rehua School of Art in Partnership with Te Papa and Photobook/NZ

In this lecture Cristina de Middel will tell the story of her journey as a photographer, from her beginnings with a Spanish local newspaper to international prominence as an associate Magnum photographer known for her innovative approach to photography and its dissemination. De Middel will address topics such as legitimacy, veracity and the changing world of photography, where facts and stereotypes are becoming harder to distinguish.

and Australia & New Zealand Photobook Awards

The Peter Turner Memorial Lecture will be followed by the launch of Photobook/NZ 2020, and announcement of the Australia & New Zealand Photobook of the Year Awards (hosted by Momento Pro). The evening will conclude at 9.00pm.

The lecture, opening, & award ceremony is a free event but registrations are essential.

Photobook collector and visual arts heaven - the Photobook/NZ Book Fair is a rare opportunity to browse and buy photobooks by New Zealand and international publishers. Limited editions, significant photobook publications, a chance to see work from around Aotearoa, as well as Australian and international publications. Our international guests Cristina de Middel, Matthew Casteel, and Perimeter Books will be bringing their titles.

Photobook/NZ is proud to be hosting an exhibition of the Australia and New Zealand Photobook of the Year Awards 2019 finalist books, showcasing the best of antipodean photo book creation. While you’re browsing the exhibition cast your vote for the People’s Choice Award.

Dan Rule and Justine Ellis of Perimeter are among Australasia’s leading art and photobook publishers, with a bookshop, distribution operation and active programme of talks, launches, exhibitions and events. They will discuss their photobook publishing output and philosophy, which highlights the material form and design of books; the culture and market for photobooks; and the wider Perimeter operation.

Matthew Casteel
10am - 11am
The Pit Lecture theatre, Block 12 (Te Ara Hihiko)
As a valet parker at a veteran’s hospital in North Carolina, Matthew Casteel began photographing the interior of veterans’ cars. The resulting photobook, American Interiors (Pub: Dewi Lewis) is a psychological portrait, through car interiors, of the damage that war does to the lives of servicemen and women. Matthew talks about his work and book, which was shortlisted for the 2018 Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards: First Photobook Prize. Matthew will also share images from his ongoing project that addresses themes of grief, mortality, and the resilience of the human spirit.

Ilam graduate photographers Mitchell Bright and Julia Johnston talk with Caroline McQuarrie about their first photobooks. Julia’s book ‘Coast Roaders’ is a portrait of the independent, alternative community who live on the Coast Road between Greymouth and Westport. Mitchell’s book, 'Transitional Landscapes', was produced as part of his MFA. It explores the changing land, shifting boundaries, and looks at the in-between state of Selywn's (Canterbury) redevelopment.

Solomon Mortimer

Solomon Mortimer is known for his innovative artist books, which bend and play with the form of the photobook. Solomon will give a guided tour through his book making practice and the ideas that lie behind it.

Ann Shelton
3pm - 3.45pm
The Pit Lecture theatre, Block 12 (Te Ara Hihiko)
Leading New Zealand photographic artist Ann Shelton will give insights into her many inventive photobooks that mix archival material, creative writing and imagery. Her seminal book, ‘Red Eye’ (1997), was published locally (Rim Books, Auckland), then picked up by Dewi Lewis (UK).

David Cook and Edith Amituanai talk about their approach to turning community based projects into photobooks. David will preview his forthcoming book Jellicoe & Bledisloe that deals with life in a state housing suburb in Hamilton. Edith will talk about her book Keep on Kimi Ora (2018), which was a deep collaboration with Flaxmere youth, where Edith and the children shared the role of photographer.

Chinese and Taiwanese photobook exhibition
Thursday 5 – Sunday 8 March, 10am - 5pm
The Engine Room gallery, Block 1, Massey University, Wellington

Curated for Photobook/NZ by Melbourne photobook expert Daniel Boetker-Smith. This exhibition includes books and works from a small number of established and emerging photobook publishers from Taiwan and China who are changing the photobook conversation internationally. Featuring publishers: Imageless, La Maison de Z, Jiazazhi, Voices of Photography and more.

Wheelchair access via the eastern or western sides of Block 12 (Te Ara Hihiko). There is lift access to all levels of the building. Entrances to The Pit are on levels B and C.
