It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see
(Henry David Thoreau 1817-1862).

This series examines the metamorphosis of the banal to the extraordinary by an experimental process of decaying Polaroid photographs.

We pass by the shop hoardings of the Auckland suburbs every day, ignoring their calls to pay attention as familiarity leads them to become dull and uninteresting, we simply do not see them anymore.

Natural elements have slowly transformed Polaroid photographs of these building facades from dull and unsightly into abstracts of beauty and intrigue. The combination of technology and nature has created unique images that reveal colours and patterns that invite scrutiny which rewards the imagination and appreciation of the abstract.

The series consists of eight A2 photographic prints of decayed Polaroid photographs, captured locally, that depict that there is beauty in the ordinary.

Linda Jarrett is a conceptual photographer who has been experimenting with the medium of photography for many years. From analogue to digital, vernacular to the aesthetic, to photographing those things that we do not normally see or are aware of. She has contributed to many group exhibitions and had her debut solo exhibition in 2018, part of the Core Exhibitions of the Auckland Festival of Photography. She has won awards both nationally and internationally, has self-published five books and has studied Art History at Oxford University, Photography at RMIT and SIT, and is currently studying for a BA (Hons) Photography with the UCA (UK).
