Documentarian and image maker Gareth Moon looks for signals in the land – transient whispers that emerge from the natural world. Such signals echo Aotearoa’s chequered histories: remnants and resonances of colonialism and industrial ‘progress’ on the environment, upon which layers of contemporary habitation are often precariously placed.
Signals explores the interconnections between climate change, colonialism, and the exploitation of native ecologies and peoples through the genre of landscape photography. At times almost imperceptible, at other times overwhelming, signals from the land and climate can be understood within vast geological timescales, revealing subtle complexity, haunting beauty and signs of renewal – and a future yet written.
